  • Are Trophies and Achievements Distracting?

Post a Reply

Let me make it clear that trophies and achievements are not a bad idea. However, I'm starting to think that trophies and achievements can overcome the enjoyment to the main experience of the game. That main experience is immersing oneself into the character inside the game. The distraction comes in when the game notifies you that you earned something. Now, I can understand that a gamer may purposefully ignore these achievements but I'm finding that these come up during important parts of the game.

My question is if trophies/achievements are distracting to you. Do you just ignore them until you complete the game? Do you think trophies/achievements should be disabled (optionally) during the 1st play through? Personally, I think trophies/achievements are useful and fun but only after I experienced the game firsthand and want to add replay value. What about you?

No. They add depth to the game and make me want to actually complete some games.

I like to get both, and they don't distract me too much.

Not getting them on the first play through? I wouldn't like that for some games, since some don't have much replay value.

I think they are awesome but an OPTION to turn off notification during play might appeal to some. I would leave them on though.

They have that option already for achievements, but not sure about trophies. I'd have to check.

I think they're cool, but I would prefer in game achievements that unlock content over gamer points. Nothing is a better motivator than stuff you can actually use in game, hence some of CoD's popularity.

Historians say ninjas disappeared hundreds of years ago, but some say they just got better......

Really? . . . didn't know that. So what is the point of this thread? LMAO!!!

Anyway, like I said, I enjoy them.

Ya I know so do I.

But I think the Wii has implemented them the best

I enjoy trophies and achievements. I admit I've done stuff in games just for some extra points that I wouldn't normally do, and that is what causes my main conflict: on one hand they give you some extra impetus to really experience everything the developers put into their titles, which is admirable. But on the other hand it makes a game a little less natural (if a game can really be described as such) to look at an arbitrary checklist of "stuff to do" to get points.

As for the notifications, I always feel a degree of pride when that little bar comes up. The gameplay and stories themselves should really be the rewards, but it's nice to get the proverbial gold star on something you've done.

My biggest complaint with them is that online achievements should be listed separately from the single-player ones; I don't do a lot of online gaming, so my e-peen seems smaller than it really is, and for some odd reason, that matters to me slightly.

Hmmmm...

I can't wait 'til I'm old enough to feel ways about stuff.
