Under Microsoft and Sony's watch, this generation put an end to $300 console launches, and $50 games (Nintendo excluded).... We're already 4 years into it, and it has taken longer for manufactures to drop the price of their consoles than any other generation before.

Wii is still priced the same as it was at launch, Sony is just now getting the PS3 down to $300, and nobody wants the handicapped $200 Xbox 360.

At this point in previous console generations going as far back as Genesis/SNES, $150 was the magic point where a console became affordable to nearly everyone. As it is, all the consoles are still priced out of reach of many gamers, and companies seem prepared to keep it that way.

"Last week he comes here and tells me, he's discovered my plot to blow up Chick-Fil-A. Why the fuck would I blow up the Chick-Fil-A? It's fucking delicious!!"

In their defense this is the first generation (far as I know) where games cost almost as much to make as movies. GTA4 cost about $100 million.

$60 is way too much for most games these days, when only about 1/5 are worth full price.

Wikipedia on NES:

For its North American release in 1985, the NES was released in two different configurations, or "bundles". The console deck itself was identical, but each bundle was packaged with different game paks and accessories. The first of these sets, the Control Deck, retailed from US$199.99 (equivalent to US$396 today), and included the console itself, two game controllers, and a Super Mario Bros. game cartridge. The second bundle, the Deluxe Set, retailed for US$249.99 (equivalent to US$495 today), and consisted of the console, a R.O.B. accessory, an NES Zapper (electronic gun), and two game paks: Duck Hunt and Gyromite.

With all things taken into consideration, I think post 1st gen and modern day gaming companies for the most part, have been fair to the consumer. I've seen gaming mags old gaming mags with NES games priced at $55.
