If you really want to understand them, Play them in order (1,2,3,4). Even though 3 is a prequel, certain things don't click unless you play 2 first, such as the existence of the Patriots.

I reccomend playing through all of them. I only played Sons of Liberty, so when I played MGS4 I didn't know what was going on that well until my second playthrough. lol.

i say only 2 is neccesary, 3 isnt too important seeing as how its a sequel, you should at least get a mutual understanding of the first game, if you cant play the games then read about the games story line on wikipedia

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

if you have a PS3, you can download the MGS4 Database, which will help have an overview of the entire Metal Gear series, but it will also "lock" all the content that deals with MGS4.

Also, I wouldn't underestimate the impact of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 which I believe come with Metal Gear 3: Subsistence. And if you have a PSP, pick up Portable Ops. It is surprising how much of the canon is explained in that game, especially about Big Boss. And yeah, the database is uncompromisingly helpful, without spoilers for 4, which you might accidentally come across if you try to catch up with, say, a wiki. Enjoy the game!
