The PS3 may still be the most expensive console on the market by quite a margin, but you are "paying for potential", says Sony marketing boss Scott Steinberg.

Microsoft earlier this week replaced the 20GB Xbox 360 with a new 60GB SKU, now on sale for the same 199 asking price, while the 40GB PS3 costs 299 with Sony showing no signs of slashing it.

It's worth the extra investment though, says Steinberg. "The price of the PS3 is high but you're paying for potential," he said, touting Sony's ten-year lifecycle plan for the shiny box.

so the question is do you buy a system for potential or for games, this has got to be the worst marketing strategy I could imagine. response to a price cut is, Yeah we are expensive, but trust us, someday it will be worth it. Why not just wait to the day it IS worth it, and buy it then ?

This user is completely without Sig... Sigless. Not at all Siggy wit' it. This is an ex-Sig.
That's what they want you to think.

One reason why I didn't buy a PS3 and let my cousin experiment it. Saved me a lot of money and I still get to play MGS4.

I figured it was a gimmick.

I dont agree with what Sonys saying. Who cares about "potential". Are they really telling us that it has all this potential but they dont know how to use it yet? Come on! I like the PS3 and Im trying not to bash it, but I think We've seen pretty much what it can do.

The nearest star is 6,000 light years away. Why is that important? Because I have no idea...
A brick has the potential to be a wall.

So this promotional thing doesnt appeal to me, it means nothing.

Saying we are paying for potential is BS. Buying a system for its longterm benefits or longevity makes sense, but potential is the wrong word.
