  • An experiment with PS2 online for gamepro forumers.

Seeing as I'm Gamepro's biggest, and quite frankly only advocate of the PS2's online games, it occurred to me that most of the people on these boards have never played their PS2 online, or have barely played. Sure, it's no live, but it's about the games right? In this experiment I will record, and post on youtube gameplay videos of every PS2 online game I own, and that's still in service. These videos will not be a great showcase of skill as much as a showcase of gameplay, so I don't need comments on my uber l33t skillz being teh sux. This is so many of you can see what if anything you may have missed on the PS2 online. Granted, a number of the games have Xbox counterparts, but I'm not sure if there's anyone playing them.

I posted a list of all my PS2 online games a while back on Gamerhelp. I realize that I'm linking to a different site, but your gamepro login will work there too damn it! Gamerhelp needs love too. Anyways, some of them are no longer in service, so I can't post vids of them all.

I know no one actually cares, and that this topic will probably fall into oblivion, but I'm gonna do it anyways, because I can, and you can't stop me. Muwahahahaha!!!!!!!!!

Why am I doing this one may ask, well that's simple.....um...I don't know, so please don't ask. Those who have to play only the newest online games need not apply.

***EDIT*** I also made a blog about it recently that tells you what you need to get online, and even runs through the games in my own personal collection.

The only game I played online with on the PS2 extensively was Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal. I dabbled in a bit of THUG 2 and 007: Everything or Nothing, but that was about it. I must have spent well over 200 hours playing Ratchet and Clank online.

i never played online with the PS2. but i did have the HDD from Final Fantasy XI: Online and the Network Adapter.

i think the only game i wanted to go online with was Resident Evil: Outbreak, because that game sucks offline with all the stupid AI following you.

I still play FFXI on my ps2, I used to play Res evil online but they closed the servers down, I also used to play monster hunter online same thing shut down the servers, I played tribes 2 ariel assault.

EQ online adventures, not sure if servers are still up, but its a shame they shut monster hunter and res evil online down instead of just porting servers to ps3.

I only wanted the HDD so i can back up my PS1/PS2 memory cards.

I didn't get into online gaming 'till this gen. The only PS2 games I played online were Socom and Twisted Metal Black. I think I might've played Madden '03 a few times as well. I'll be looking forward to the videos.

Tribes still has a huge cult following on Onlineconsoles.com.

You guys wanna see something cool. If you go to this list of online PS2 games, and click on the gamespy tabs on the right side of the screen (the little green guys in the trench coats), it will take you to a link that shows you how many people are playing the games online. Most of them have no one online, but there are a few that are populated.

Ok, I've started out with Area 51. This little gem is also on the Xbox, but I can't vouch for how many if any play it on Live. I can vouch for the fact that the PS2 version has a small, but hardcore following. There's always someone on. I took my footage at 12am AZ time, and there was still one game going. At peak time there's 30-40 people on which isn't a whole lot, but you won't have trouble finding games.

I had to split the footage up into two ten minute videos. Part one is here, and Here is part 2. Pick one. They're both pretty long.
