Review: Sorority Boys
Men dressed up as women never fail to make Mz. Vixen laugh, and Sorority Boys did just that?even if it made her feel a little cheap afterward.
Sorority Boys, another gross-out teen comedy, is like a one-night stand. I enjoyed the flick while I was watching it, cackling so hard sometimes that I nearly fell off my seat. I thought it was pretty funny as I left the theater, recounting moments like the infamous dildo sword fight (more on that later). But the day after, I felt a little cheap, shamefully shaking my head for laughing at crude sex jokes that were picked out of the American Pie leftovers bin.
And, just as one thinks a one-night stand is a good idea at the time (thanks in part to a few too many cocktails) I also thought seeing Sorority Boys would be a good idea. I mean, I thought the plot sounded entertaining?especially after Major Mike and I had a few cold ones. Three KOK (yes, KOK) frat boys, Dave (Barry Watson), Adam (Michael Rosenbaum) and Doofer (Harland Williams of Half Baked), get kicked out of the house for allegedly stealing the frat?s money that is to be used for their annual party. With nowhere to live, they turn to the Delta Omicron Gamma house (yes, DOG), a sorority filled with Andre-the-Giant?sized women who have hairy upper lips and donkey-like guffaws. And since men dressed as women rarely look attractive, save for the professional drag queens and some guests on the Ricky Lake show, the boys fit right in with the other dogs?er?DOGs. But wearing nylons and curling their lashes is only a temporary solution. The guys are waiting for the chance to sneak back into the KOK house and find a video tape that will show who really stole the money, which will prove their innocence and land them back in the house.
Until then, however, Dave, Adam, and Doofer have to live their lives as Daisy, Adina, and Roberta, and they soon start to feel the self-esteem issues many women face, like thinking your butt deserves an ?oversized load? sign tattooed on it, as well as the joys of womanhood, like finding a skirt on sale in your size. But Sorority Boys isn?t all men-dressed-up-as-women humor. The plot thickens when ?Daisy? becomes good friends with Leah (Melissa Sagemiller) and eventually falls for her. Some naughty shower scenes and even a little girl-girl-who?s-really-a-boy kissing scene ensue, fulfilling the requisite lesbian kissing scene quota in a roundabout way. In fact, most of Sorority Boys felt like watching a bunch of teen movie quotas being filled. There were the perky breasts shots, the rowdy frat party scenes, the goofy character (Williams) and the one who secretly likes Shakespeare (Watson), and the happy ending where the male chauvinists KOKs realize how awful non-model?looking women are treated and that true beauty is on the inside.
But I knew from the get-go that Sorority Boys wasn?t going to land a spot on my ?Top Ten Movies of All Times? list. Instead, I made it number one on my new list: ?Top Ten American Pie Clones with Lots of Sex Jokes and Some Saucy Naked Scenes.? There were tons of sex jokes, a cast of characters in that awkward in-between high school and college stage, a dildo fight scene where Adina and Daisy use colorful, rubbery dildos as swords, and yes, plenty of naked (and almost-naked) scenes thrown in for the hell of it. So even though Sorority Boys will get snubbed for an Oscar, if you?re in the mood for another teen movie with racy humor and men in heels, check it out.
I?d much rather have a few cold ones with the Major and see if I could get him to dress up as a woman, though!
