I've gotten a lot of mail from readers claiming they're just not fast enough with their hands to play real-time strategy games. If you're one of those people, read no further. Eye-to-hand coordination is not something I can possibly teach you. But I do have a few tricks that even Starcraft players don't take advantage of.
Hotkeys
I'm sure you all bind numbered hotkeys to your
units, but are you remembering to bind hotkeys to
your most important hotspots, like far-off garrisons
and resources? You should keep reassigning your
hotspots as the game goes on--to save time, of
course. Half the Starcraft players I've talked to don't
even use the location hotkeys.
Hotkeys won't make your hands faster, but they'll save you the time you need to focus your fast hand elsewhere. Bind important resource depots, secondary bases, and outposts to hotkeys for easy viewing.
Mouse speed
The first thing I noticed about the great players was
that they were moving and reacting faster. At first I
thought this had something to do with fast thinking,
but I soon found out that it's all about your mouse
speed. Gradually raise your mouse-cursor speed.
It'll be uncomfortable at first, but once you've
mastered it on a high setting, you'll be faster than
you were before. You'll be able to scroll the map
faster, and you'll be quicker at selecting units and
reordering them. It will take practice and
determination, but once you go sensitive, you'll
never go back. And you'll be reacting faster than
your enemies will--literally.
