Strategy Guide: Starcraft (Page 2)
Fast Thinking
Now that you have your
pre-game plans, you'll
need to work on fast
thinking. This is actually
not very hard, as most
great Starcraft players
will tell you. Everyone
playing Starcraft is a fast
thinker, yet some of us
become very nervous
during play and make
crucial mistakes.
Fast thinking rule No. 1: Don't stress
I've talked to some of the greatest Starcraft players,
and the only consistent advice they've shared with
me is to relax. "Relax, don't make mistakes, and
don't get nervous," they say. "A lot of Starcraft
players beat themselves up mentally, and thus lose
matches." Remember it's just a game, ladder or
not. Keep your mind clear and don't get
discouraged. It helps to stick to your pre-game plan
if you get nervous.
Fast thinking rule No. 2: When to ditch the
pre-game plan
So now you can relax and just enjoy the game.
You've stuck to your pre-game plan, but now it's not
working like it should. Don't worry, just relax and
think about what you need to do next.
Fast thinking rule No. 3: Defense
Keep in mind exactly what you need to do if you get
into a terrible situation. You have to be prepared to
defend yourself no matter what. Let's say you're
getting rushed by Zealots--the last thing you'll want
to do is stress out. Simply gather units to fight
them off, and immediately begin building new units.
But, more importantly, relax. Quickly think about
getting more units and diverting attention from other
goals. Stop mining gas, for instance, as you'll want
quick, cheap units that don't require any gas to
begin with. Next, build another Barracks or
Hatchery nearby to speed production. You might
lose this game, but next time, you'll be prepared.
