The Catch
All of the multiplayer functions would make a rather enjoyable experience if not for the game's numerous bugs. People have reported widespread problems, from texture issues to performance, though the primary complaints are crashes. A recent patch for the single player portion fixed a laundry list of issues, but surprisingly, these prevalent and devastating lockups went unaddressed. On our test machine, the game often freezes while loading a level in both single player and multiplayer. This requires a hard restart of the computer and often leads to lost progress.
Even without the technical problems, the game itself has issues. The story is flat and meandering while the voice acting is either mediocre or melodramatic . Also, while the combat is generally enjoyable, there are gameplay sequences (one involving a giant worm) that devolve into trial and error as you attempt to find the path the developers intended in order to avoid instant death. Moreover, things often devolve into random chaos during the multiplayer as one team slowly loses the match. All you can do to organize at that point is to send urgent (and usually ignored) text messages to your team.
In the end it doesn't matter for most people how fun the game can be if you're unable to play it. If these problems are resolved through future patches, the game will be a fun, original and varied fantasy first person action game with only a few rough gameplay points. As it stands right now, it's hard for us to recommend Dark Messiah to anyone but the most diehard fan of the genre or someone for whom its innovations are worth the trial of patience.
PROTIP: Be creative when you're fighting.
