Commando 3 Destination Berlin

Dedicated strategy fans will enjoy tackling Commando 3?s demanding combat scenarios.

A follow-up to last year?s gem Commandos 2: Men of Courage, Destination Berlin offers diehard strategy fans a worthwhile cerebral challenge, provided they can master the difficult controls.

Destination Berlin looks much like its predecessor, complete with authentic WWII-era city environments (like Stalingrad and Normandy) and blurry interior rooms. One long-overdue improvement is the introduction of lifelike 3D character models, but it?s a shame that the grainy video resolution mars the overall visual shine. On the sound front, Destination Berlin pumps out a rousing Hollywood-style soundtrack, along with immersive gunshots and explosions. The repetitive character comments, however, are DOA.

Though it?s aimed at advanced strategy buffs, Destination Berlin?s revamped tutorial mode is a helpful bonus; still, it?s no replacement for hours of experimentation and practice. And due to the game?s confusing interface and obscure keyboard commands, the manual will prove to be a particularly valuable ally. Once you overcome the demanding controls, however, you?ll find that Destination Berlin is unique because it rewards players who think creatively and plan ahead. And thanks to the designers upgrading the already crafty enemy AI, it?s especially important to quicksave frequently. One more notable addition to Destination Berlin is the new multiplayer option, which is unfortunately handicapped by a lack of game modes (just Deathmatch and Capture the Flag) and online gameplay (LAN games only). Despite these shortcomings, Destination Berlin?s blend of battlefield strategy and sneaky infiltration will appeal to experienced strategy fans. Novices should scout out another battle.
