Company of Heroes

An exclusive update on the World War II strategy game every PC player is dying to know about.

Several years ago, the developers at Relic decided that they weren't satisfied with the experience provided by other strategy games on the market. Games like WarCraft 3 showed off jaw-dropping opening cinemas, but the actual gameplay presentation lagged far behind, depicting emotionless "toy soldier" troops marching listlessly through static battlefields.

Relic had loftier ambitions in mind, and itched to create a game where highly expressive soldiers fought for survival on a "living battlefield." Relic quietly drew up plans and set to work. And with that, Company of Heroes was born.

Company of Heroes employs high-end physics calculations and next-generation particle rendering.

Tooth and Claw
As with The Outfit, Relic's debut Xbox 360 action title, Company of Heroes takes place during the dark days of World War II. But despite the shared setting, the two games couldn't be more different. Where swashbuckling action reigns supreme in The Outfit, a somber, reflective atmosphere haunts Company of Heroes. And that mature tone is certainly appropriate, because Company of Heroes chronicles the experiences of one Allied company during Operation Overlord, which stands as one of the bloodiest invasions in military history.

The single-player game chronicles the adventures of one Allied company; Relic is unlikely to include a single-player experience played from the Axis point of view, though you'll be able to commandeer German forces in the multiplayer mode. Speaking of multiplayer gameplay, Relic is hoping to support up to eight simultaneous players in the final version of Company of Heroes.

Other gameplay details are still under tight wraps. How, for instance, will the economy and unit tech trees work? Relic is keeping mum for now, but promises to shed light on these gameplay fundamentals soon.

The action is fast and ferocious, with city skirmishes being particularly suspenseful.
