First Look: Call of Duty 2

Do your part for your country in the sequel to the best shooter of 2003.

Activision is bringing Call of Duty 2, the sequel to the award-winning World War II first person shooter, to both Xbox 360 and PC. Developed by Infinity Ward, former members of the Medal of Honor Allied Assault team, Call of Duty 2 will feature innovative gameplay, overhauled visuals including detailed characters and environments, advanced A.I. technology, historic campaign missions and more thanks to the game's proprietary new engine.

"Our team at Infinity Ward is committed to thrusting gamers into the heat of battle like no other, taking players on a thrill-ride of adrenaline that leaves everyone gasping for air," says Grant Collier, President of Infinity Ward. "In Call of Duty 2, we are creating the most intense and realistic action game imaginable with a stunning visual atmosphere and an advanced technology that delivers an unprecedented level of authenticity."

Players can expect more of the cinematic style and feel of the Call of Duty games and experience the second "war to end all wars" by controlling four different characters, each with their own storyline. Much larger battlefields will be included in the game, letting you choose multiple paths to complete your mission objectives. Call of Duty 2 will also include separate historic missions for quick fragfests, such as the Pointe du Hoc mission, where six enormous artillery beasts known as the 155 mm gun shot at American troops from a cliff.

The improved A.I. creates a more realistic enemy, as soldiers are more cautious when peeking around corners, checking their sites and responding in actual combat tactics such as outflanking and fire and maneuver. Other specs on the game are a high-tech Battle Chatter System, which will have A.I. characters vocally update you on their status, and new weather effects such as blizzards and sandstorms, which will actually blind players and force them to take cover until conditions improve.

In the original game, players could engage in team-based multiplayer matches online, as either Axis or Allies--although Activision has not commented specifically on the online content of Call of Duty 2, you can be sure that a similar deal is in store for players when the game is released this fall.
