American McGee's Grimm

American McGee is back, and he's brought his skewed storytelling styles with him. In a title that's part Alice and part Katamari Damacy, Grimm manages to stand alone as a completely original, and utterly twisted experience.

In American McGee's Grimm, you take on the role of the titular character Grimm: a short, filthy bearded man who spreads darkness and gloom wherever he goes. It's your task to navigate Grimm through various familiar fairy tale worlds - all populated with classical storybook characters and environments - and foul them up beyond recognition. In each level, Grimm starts with a pre-determined filth gauge, ranging from "Smelly" to "Vile". The more ground you cover, expanding your filthy gloom, the higher your ability to make things nasty - but be on the lookout for pesky cleaners, trying to maintain the pristine condition of their storybook world. Thanks to the technology of the Unreal Engine 3.0 (used to create Gears of War), the transformations from light and pleasant to dark and twisted happens in real time with no slowdown whatsoever. That lovely flower patch you just passed? Now home to an army of carnivorous foliage. Before long, the entire environment from the sky to the water will have transformed into a nightmarish version of itself, preventing any pesky "Happily Ever Afters" from ever occurring.

Grimm is slated to launch on July 31st, and will debut as the first weekly episodic video game exclusively on GameTap. Each week, Grimm will traverse and perverse a new fairy tale from Little Red Riding Hood to Snow White, each with added power-ups, obstacles, and challenges based on player feedback. With its innovative concept and unique gameplay, Grimm is certainly a title to keep an eye on. Be warned: Happily ever after ends here.

From light to dark.

From light to dark.
