Preview: Crysis: Single-Player Impressions
Got a good gaming rig? You NEED this game.
Crysis multiplayer impressions can be found here.
Onboard the U.S.S. Hornet--a permanently docked out-of-commission World War II aircraft carrier--a couple dozen high-end rigs were set up with the latest single and multiplayer builds of Crysis, the next-gen PC game to die for.
The Hornet seemed a somewhat appropriate place to engage in some delicious virtual combat, and Moses and I both flaunted our game, though his bright yellow Katamari t-shirt wasn't exactly beaming intimidation (for the details on our lengthy multiplayer LAN session with Crysis, check out Travis' impressions).
That shurbery can provide much-needed cover.
Thankfully, the day started with little competition: a morning coffee and hour-long single player session with a new level of Crysis could hardly be considered a day at work. The machines were running single 8800 GTXs, and everything was off and operating incredibly smooth. Resolution was set at 1600x1024 (if I remember correctly) and we were playing the DX-9 version of the game.
A New Level: Assault
The new level was called Assault. It was an outdoor setting, not as lush as some of the jungle areas that have been recently showcased, but not without a good amount of foliage. Heavily guarded by enemies on land, air and sea, keeping out of sight could only help accomplish my objectives, the primary of which had me blowing up a trio of anti-aircraft guns. Setting up the scenario was a short cinematic that showed off some great facial textures and much better acting than anything in Far Cry. As I advanced with the rest of my A.I. squad mates, an aircraft crashed near the road below, resulting in a massive explosion.
The three AA guns appeared as objectives on the radar. The first was up ahead at the end of the current road, but it was lined with sneaky A.I. If you played Far Cry, you know what I'm talking about. But the A.I. in Crysis is even smarter, working together to hunt you like a rodent. I started with a pistol.
