This Persistent Life #10

E3 has come and gone. Did anything noteworthy happen on the MMO front?

To say that this E3 was a bit of a non-event as far as MMOs go would be a bit of an understatement. For better or worse, publishers seemed to focus the show on games that are closer to release--in most cases, titles that will see the light of day before the year's up. This naturally complicates things a bit for MMOs, which are notorious for being announced years before they'll be out. Apart from a few decent-looking titles, the pickings were slim with some no-brainer games being conspicuous in their absence.

Two weeks ago I wrote about the games I wanted to see at the show. In retrospect, I realize that I was being quite optimistic in regards to what would actually be there. I'll start the column off with a rundown of a few of the games I cited in my last column, and finish it off with a couple of unexpected surprises that emerged during the show.

Frankly, I'm a bit nonplussed. For a minute forget about all this MMO shit; E3 2007 was all about Fallout 3, which goes to show: the most impressive game at the show is one that won't be out for at least another year. Kind of says something about the public's propensity to get excited about stuff that it won't get access to in the immediate future. Anyway, without further ado...

An E3 MMO Recap:

Warhammer: Age of Reckoning

Surprisingly, Warhammer was a no-show at E3. I guess EA couldn't reconcile the needs of a complex MMO with the limited space (and attendees' compromised attention spans) available at the show. Too bad.

As expected, Tabula Rasa was a prime focus for NCSoft at the show--so much so that Richard "Lord Garriott" British ditched his high fantasy fineries and donned some military fatigues for the occasion. Is he Admiral British now? Or General-issimo British? I digress. The general consensus is that the game looked quite promising, with the E3 demo showcasing its impressive-for-the-genre AI system and offering a sample of the moral ambiguities that players will have wrestle with when questing. The combat was impressive as well; action packed, and explosive. Overall, a good showing. I can't wait for the open beta.
