The original Lumines came to the PSP as a launch title and was regarded by many as one of the best games the system had to offer. It brought fresh gameplay concepts to the puzzle genre with the way music integrated into the game and created an addictive gaming experience.

For Lumines II, instead of trying to fix what wasn't broken, Buena Vista decided to pile more content on top of the already brilliant game.
Second Helpings
Look familiar? The same basic gameplay remains intact.
Zero changes have been made to the great core gameplay we saw in the original game. There are tons of new stages (or "skins"), one new game mode, the animation is smoother, and the musical selection is even more varied this time around. The new mode, Mission Mode, adds a new wrinkle to the gameplay by giving you a series of progressively harder challenges. It's as enjoyable and solid as the other modes of play and should provide an ample challenge for both newcomers and veterans.
All of the modes from the original are back. Challenge, Time Attack, CPU Vs., Puzzle, and 1v1 multiplayer modes are still here, receiving very few to no changes. The single skin mode has been changed to a "Skin Edit" mode that allows you to play on a series of skins that you've unlocked in the order of your choosing.
The most drastic change I found was in the CPU vs. mode. Previously, the CPU vs. mode got very difficult in the later stages as your computer opponents brought some serious pain. In all my time with the original I never beat one of the later opponents, but I managed to beat the entire thing in one play through this time around.
Is this sequel worth a purchase? Ultimately, the game amounts to a very extensive map pack with one new game mode, but because the great gameplay of the original is left intact, Lumines II is still a very enjoyable experience. If, for whatever reason, you're a puzzle game fan and PSP owner that doesn't own the original Lumines you should run out and buy this game. If you have the first one and are hungry for more music and skins, then this sequel will provide you with a fresh canvas.
