Vehicle physics are good, though ground particle effects are a little off.
I remember an environmental PC demo of Just Cause two years ago, and even at that early juncture, I was very impressed, but the final version blew me away. I took this baby home and fired it up on my 34" 720p CRT and it looked phenomenal. Active, tall blades of grass react to Rico's movements, above and underwater effects are awesome, and the sprawling island landscape never ceases to impress.
If there is any knock on the engine, I'd say that the lighting and shadow casting is almost too realistic, causing either blinding reflections or an incredibly dark display, specifically at night. In short, if you don't have an HDTV, you'll be at a real disadvantage with this one as the game with have an overall muttered and pixelated look of a current-gen experience.
Above and underwater effects are awesome.
As a whole, I really enjoyed Just Cause, and I think it will give Saints Row a run for its money. Just Cause has a great chance of filling the gap until Rockstar attempts to uphold its throne in the sandbox genre.
