The King of Fighters 2006

Just More of the Same

That's not to say that King of Fighters 2006 is a bad game: it's decent enough, especially if you're a fan of 3-D fighting games and/or the SNK universe. Like all compilation fighting titles- in which a company mashes together the rosters of all its various franchises together- KoF 2006 has a ton of characters to choose from.

The graphics are also decent as the transition to 3-D doesn't negatively impact the experience (fans of loosely clothed women with generous proportions are in for a treat). There's also a complex fighting system that actually rewards careful timing and quick reflexes (though button mashing still works too).

However, actually playing the game induces such a strong sense of deja vu that you can't help but feel jaded; this is the same sort of game we've been playing since the 3-D fighting genre was first established. And to make matters worse, the one thing that could have saved the title from being a pointless exercise in mediocrity is glaringly absent. We speak, of course, of the ability to play the game online against a human opponent. Add in the poor translations and English voice-work (which you can thankfully switch to the original Japanese voices), the been there, done that gameplay and a general feeling of oldness that pervades everything and you've got the recipe for a game that should be relegated to the past.

If they ever invent a time machine, SNK should set it for the date of the PS2 launch and chuck KoF 2006 through; that, and that only, might make this game relevant.
