Surf Rocket Racer's levels look a lot like the ones found in Hydro Thunder with cool backgrounds, jumps, and even hidden short cuts, but they aren't as fun to race on due to painfully long collision recovery times and generally simple layouts. Still, courses in Rome, Manhattan, and Niagra Falls make for some cool scenery. The game controls well and smaller players like Matt are quick and nimble while larger characters like Max are fast, but less agile. A total of seven playable characters are available, each with unique skills and advantages.
With over a dozen mini games, SRR offers plenty to keep you occupied. Some, like the Bunny Hop challenge, are a blast, while others, like Beach Balloon Run, are a hassle. Championship mode challenges you to race through a series of courses against the clock, AI players, or one other human player. If you are a water racing fanatic and want nothing more than to use your Dreamcast to race jet-ski's then look no further, but if you're just looking for a solid racing game, keep on lookin'.
Graphics: The backgrounds are pretty and the characters are clean, but there's nothing spectacular to make the graphics stand out and take advantage of the Dreamcast's power.
Sound: Get your stereo ready. The announcer is fine but the soundtrack is boring and repetitive. Engine sounds are subtle and innocuous and there's not much atmospheric sound to speak of.
Control: Each player controls differently which is nice. Controls are responsive, but collisions take a painfully long time to recover from, so don't run into anything.
Fun Factor: The game looks a bit like Hydro Thunder, but it is a far cry from the addictive gameplay that excellent title featured.
