NASCAR 2001 rolls out of pit lane and onto the PS2 with all the tuning that stock-car fans will expect: slick A.I., sleek car models, and best of all, virtually no pop-up. Between the sharp visuals, exhaustive features (inlcuding the addition of Daytona for the first time), and smooth controls, this PS2 rookie handles like a winner. Ho-hum sounds mean it's not perfect, but it's close enough to thrill stock-car fans look for the next cool ride.

Graphics: Stock cars have never looked sharper as these rides gleam with detail. Although the tracks are sometimes a little lackluster, there's virtually no pop-up-an impressive feat.

Sound: NASCAR's sounds are solid?but they could be a lot better. The commentator's delivery is professional, but their remarks are bland, and the spotter could be more helpful.

Control: Despite some missing basics like a look-back view, NASCAR's sweet handling pays off. It's not aimed at the arcade crowd, but still hits the right balance between realism and fun.

Fun Factor: If you spend your Sundays dreaming of taking Jeff Gordon into the wall, NASCAR 2001 has the speed to satisfy your need. It's not perfect, but it's a polished, exciting ride.
