Now this is how to port classic arcade games. Three of the four 3D-accelerated action games on Funpack 3D preserve the enjoyable gameplay of the originals with a clever spin that makes them more than just a side of rehash.

The Pacman variant, Chomper!, lets you play from the first-person view of the yellow, dot-eating sphere (as well as several third-person angles). The game is essentially the same, but the perspective totally changes the play. It's nearly impossible to finish a level when you're really down in the trenches, and the tension grows tenfold when you turn a corner to find a furious ghost floating toward you.

One of the most addictive arcade/console games ever-Missile Command-gets a straightforward remake. Missile Defense puts you in an Incoming-style pivoting turret with a radar screen to alert you to the warheads. It's as easy as the original (although I always felt that using nukes to stop nukes was somewhat counterproductive) and just as hard to put down.

Meteor Gunner is what Activision should have done with the Asteroids license. It's a 360-degree shooting gallery--much more difficult than the 2D version (chasing down the last bits of space debris is a major pain), but still highly playable.

The only unsightly blemish is Super Brick Breaker. Breakout clones usually end up like this one: too easy to keep the ball in play and too tough to catch the bricks in the far corners. But that's just one weak link in a chain of strong remakes. If you're an old-school arcadian, pick up this Funpack. You owe it to that child within who was always running out of quarters.
