NFL Blitz 2K1

More sacks for your dollar: NFL Blitz 2001 receives the Dreamcast kickoff and cruises to the endzone.

The original NFL Blitz gave the term "extreme sports" new meaning. By combining NFL football action with professional wrestling-style tackles, a slick control scheme, and over the top commentary and action, NFL Blitz set the standard for a host of imitators.

Quarterback Sack
Now Blitz is in its second year on the Dreamcast, and there are a few new goods for fans, but at its heart, Blitz remains the same game that so many gamers know and love. Insane interceptions, multiple fumbles, and crushing tackles are still at the center of the Blitz experience.

The interface and control scheme is essentially unchanged, so the Blitz veteran will feel right at home. You can pick from a quick arcade game, or try to take your team to the championship in a season. In last year's Blitz 2000, only one player could play a season, but new this year, up to eight players can compete in season mode. You can also set up a single- or double-elimination tournament for up to eight players. Aside from the main game, Blitz 2001 offers up some new special situation mini games (like a goal line stand) that are interesting, but might not hold your interest for long.

Blitz And Glamour
On the field, Blitz comes alive with hard-hitting, name-calling, teeth-grinding action. There are only seven players to a team on-field, so the game is more open than a regular game of football, but that doesn't mean the action isn't intense. There is a decent amount of variety among the pre-made plays, and a sweet play editor lets you custom design any wild play your imagination can dream up.

Once you hike the ball, anything goes. The game is named Blitz, and putting pressure on the QB can work, but it hurts to get burned long, and the computer is better at blocking and hitting receivers.

Blitzed Out
The latest Blitz for the Dreamcast is not a huge improvement over the last one, but there is enough here for true Blitz fans to pick up the sequel. For the rest of you who haven't experienced NFL Blitz yet, Blitz 2001 is a great football game that concentrates on action and fun.
