The Sydney 2000 games are underway and PlayStation gamers can get more Olympic action on their system in Sydney 2000 from Eidos.

On the Field
Sydney 2000 is comprised of 12 separate events, half of which are standard track and field fare like javelin, 110 meter hurdles, and high jump, and the other half is made up of nonconventional events like kayaking, weight lifting, diving, sprint cycling, 100M swimming, and skeet shooting to round out the experience. You can play a quick event or series of events or go into a training mode where you'll hit the treadmill and weight room to boost your skills.

As a game, Sydney 2000 is uneven. Some events are much more fun than others. Kayaking is challenging but tough to control, while the 100 meter sprint is more of a button mashing affair. Still, the game demands you to be extremely precise in the tempo of your button presses, and the level of difficulty can be almost too high.

The training to build up you virtual competitor is a nice idea, but it's just no fun bench-pressing a barbell. The graphics in Sydney are a mixed bag as well. The animations are done well, but the textures and models are a bit plain.

In The Locker Room
If you're hankering for some Olympic competition and want to go beyond the standard track and field events, Sydney 2000 is a decent pick. It's not a gold medal winner, but it finishes the PlayStation invitational with a bronze.
