Eidos and developer ATD are bringing Olympic fever to the Dreamcast with their summer sports game Sydney 2000. This collection of track and field events combined with kayaking, skeet shooting, weight lifting, and other summer Olympic competitions fares a bit better on the Dreamcast than on the PlayStation.

Spirit Of The Games
In Sydney 2000, up to four gamers can compete in twelve different events that include the standard track and field events (javelin, hammer, high jump, and 110 meter hurdles), as well as other games like platform diving and sprint cycling, for a total of twelve events in all. There is a quick arcade mode, or you can opt for a more career-style coaching mode in which you train your virtual athlete in the gym, lifting weights, running on the treadmill, etc. It's an interesting concept, but doesn't quite come off in the execution.

The Dreamcast gives Sydney 2000's graphics and control a boost over the PlayStation version. Your character is more responsive to your button presses and the textures are much sharper. Still, like the PlayStation version, the game requires a specific tempo to your button presses, and it's very difficult to gauge correctly.

Closing Ceremony
Overall, Sydney 2000 for the Dreamcast is a better game than the PlayStation version in more ways than one, but it's still held to a bronze medal finish in the sports games category. If you've got Olympic fever, Sydney 2000 will carry the torch for you, but only so far.
