All three of you who remember the old Iron Soldier on the Atari Jaguar will want to take note of this new foray into the IS universe. While Iron Soldier was one of the first games to redefine 3D giant robot action, the third in the line doesnt even redefine the series.

All three of you who remember the old Iron Soldier on the Atari Jaguar will want to take note of this new foray into the IS universe. While Iron Soldier was one of the first games to redefine 3D giant robot action, the third in the line doesn't even redefine the series.

Soldier of Misfortune
The original Iron Soldier was released in 1994 for the ambitious but ill-fated Atari Jaguar, and it's often remembered as one of the best games for that system. When the Jaguar died to the mainstream public, only Iron Soldier lived on, and a sequel was released to the hands of hardcore Jag fanatics via the Internet. Now Vatical is the publisher for the third installment of the series, and, well, it looks like the Iron Soldier has finally rusted through.

In Iron Soldier 3, you take control of a gigantic mechanized robot which you outfit with weapons and send out against the generic forces of evil. The draw to Iron Soldier is that you're a massive juggernaut that can punch down buildings, stomp on tanks, and cover huge distances with your massive stride. IS3, oddly enough, doesn't show that much improvement over the ancient Jaguar versions; the graphics chop up as explosions fill the screen, and frame rates drop significantly whenever you move quickly. The sound is mostly generic explosions and no music plays during the missions. The controls, while decent, make common movements like strafing and torso rotation unnecessarily complicated.

Iron Doldrums
With giant robot sims like Gundam: Side Story 0079 on the shelves, Its hard to justify putting time and money into Iron Soldier 3. If youre a nostalgic Jaguar fan, or if you must own a PlayStation mech sim, then you might want to give IS3 a try, but most gamers will find it too slow, too little, and too late.
