Old mixing with new
It?s always a tough proposition updating a beloved 2D franchise into the world of 3D. Will the game play better in 3D? Will it look dated if the game stays in 2D? Capcom has decided to try middle ground, merging 3D backgrounds with 2D characters in the new version of Strider 2 for PlayStation, and the results are equally mixed. The meat of Strider 2 is the classic gameplay, and thank goodness, that has remained untouched. Controlling Strider has never been sweeter, and the skill ratings at the end of each level are nice extras that make you want to play the levels over and over again. The character graphics look sharp when viewed at their optimum size, but they often come across as blocky, pixely sprites whenever the game zooms in and out.
Battle against evil
The major weaknesses of Strider 2 are the game?s length and overall flow. You can easily beat the game in one sitting - pretty disappointing, especially for Strider veterans. To compensate, the skill ratings and some extras unlocked by beating the game are thrown in, but it?s really not enough to make up for the short main game. Even worse is how the levels are broken up by long loading times. There are some very cool still shots during story cinemas and many other touches that will make Strider fans happy. Overall, only those who are really big fans of the series will appreciate all the nuances of Strider 2.
