Marvel vs. Capcom 2

Most Capcom sequels don't add much to the fighting genre, but Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 marks a huge change to the MvC franchise. Luckily, it's a welcome and surprising change that definitely brings something new to Capcom's Versus series.

Gonna Take You For a Ride
Whenever Capcom updates any of its fighting games, there's a certain level of anticipation, as well as a knowledge that there won't be huge changes. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 definitely throws in a ton of changes that are both surprising and well thought out. The first major change is the fighting system, which now sports only four regular attack buttons, with the other two controlling various tag partner actions. This is a great idea and adds to the kinetic energy of an all out team bout. The other major bonus is the humongous cast, weighing in at 56 selectable fighters.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was developed on Sega's Naomi arcade board which is basically the same as a Dreamcast. With this extra power, the backgrounds have been given quite a boost with generous uses of 3D graphics colored to blend in with the 2D contestants. It doesn't quite look seamless, and the character sprites take on a jagged look, but it doesn't detract too much from the visual fireworks. The sound, on the other hand, is a mixed bag of good and questionable. The sound effects of the action are fantastic and convey the right amount of pizzazz and punch. The jazzy background music however seems out of place and is downright annoying at times.

Ranking In
There's no question that this is the best yet for the Versus series, but it does leave the same troubling questions Street Fighter Alpha 3 did; "Where do you go from here?". With insane amounts of selectable characters and play options, what can possibly be done to top it? Surely, Capcom will come up with something.
