Hey, everybody, it's the Wacky Races! Infogrames brings you a cartoon-based kart racer that looks like a lot of fun, - but looks aren't everything.

Hanna-Barbara Meets Mario Kart
In Wacky Races, you take the role of one of the most offbeat racing teams in the history of the sport, choosing from such personalities as Penelope Pitstop, the Ant Hill Mob, Peter Perfect, and more. With a nod to Crash Team Racing, Wacky Races has an adventure mode of sorts, in which you race in the interest of unlocking new tracks, beating tough challenges, and winning the chance to race against the ultimate evil, Dick Dastardly himself.

From the get-go, Wacky Races is about pleasing the senses. The real-time blacklining effect works wonders on the intricately detailed 3D car models, and the cars and characters move like they did in the old cartoon. The music and voice samples will take nostalgic gamers back to the good ol''days, but a couple of sound bugs and repetitious sound bites threaten to break the illusion of playing a cartoon.

Wack Races
With so much coolness in its presentation, Wacky Races ultimately disappoints once you actually begin playing the game. The cars control sluggishly, and at times it feels like you're driving through a viscous gel. The cars' weapons work fine, but in a typical race you won't get much chance to use them. The worst problem is that sometimes the camera can't see through the larger vehicles when they run up behind you, and not seeing the road can make for difficult precision racing.

Still, Wacky Races is a visual treat for animation junkies, and fans of the series will love seeing their favorites again. If you're not a fan of old cartoons, though, you might want to race right by Wacky Races.
