Mega Man Maverick Hunter X

Mega Man is back and he's on the PSP! But, has he aged like a fine wine, or just ended up turning in to vinegar in this remake of a 1997 classic?
Like an annoying family member who just doesn't go away, the Mega Man franchise has been familiar to gamers for a long time; perhaps too long for some. So it was a wise choice for Capcom to debut the Blue Bomber on the PSP with one of his better titles; Mega Man X. But with so many underwhelming ports on the PSP already, is this one a worthwhile purchase?Don't Be So Blue
It can't be denied that the game has a bunch of new features, brand new 3D graphics chief among them. A blend of 2D sidescrolling with 3D visuals, Maverick Hunter X is certainly an attractive game. Characters and levels are faithfully reproduced and look outstanding on the PSP's bright screen. But being a port of the original SNES version, level design and gameplay are essentially carbon copies. Some upgrades for X have switched stages to add variety, and all dialogue is now voice-acted - albeit poorly as usual - but the graphics are the true show stealer, yet even they suffer from occasional slowdown when too much is happening onscreen. A few other bonuses made their way into the gamea 25 minute anime, a demo of Mega Man Powered Up, and an unlockable campaign for X's nemesis Vilebut none of them proved to add much longevity to this already short game.
X Doesn't Quite Mark the Spot
So is it worth it? It's hard to say yes. The game has its moments of fun, so long as you don't mind trial-and-error repetition. Boss fights can often devolve into a one-way expletive-shouting match between you and your PSP, especially if you don't know the best order to fight them. For those faithfully dedicated to Mega Man, such affronts will be perfectly forgivable, but for anyone else Maverick Hunter X proves to be a pretty, if rather pedestrian first outing on Sony's handheld.
