The original Hot Shots Golf was a refreshing shot of fun in a genre dominated by sim seriousness. Now Sony brings you Hot Shots Golf 2, a game which hangs on to the silliness of its predecessor, but somehow manages to lose most of the original game's cool.

The original Hot Shots Golf was a refreshing shot of fun in a genre dominated by sim seriousness. Now Sony brings you Hot Shots Golf 2, a game which hangs on to the silliness of its predecessor, but somehow manages to lose most of the original game's cool.

Replace Your Divots In Hot Shots Golf 2, you take control of one of three cartoony golfers, playing over some rather challenging holes and dastardly terrain as you attempt to level the links. While Hot Shots Golf 2 may have all the action of any other golf game, what sets it apart is its cartoony look and feel, with funky characters and an announcer that says things like, "You're the man!" when you do well. Hit a nice shot, and the ball pops and fires off like a bullet. Sink a birdie, and watch your character dance up a storm. Score a bogey, and your golfer will skulk in humiliation. It's all so easy to control that even the slow and peaceful nature of golf can't keep the fun out of Hot Shots 2.

Just A-Swingin' Unfortunately, Hot Shots Golf 2 just doesn't match up to the original in presentation. The cute manga-style characters have been replaced with golfers that wouldn't look out of place in a R. Crumb anthology. The sound is more or less silence, broken by the swish of a club, the clink of a ball hitting the hole, or the annoying prattle of the announcer, who is several times more grating than the original Hot Shots. In all, while the gameplay may be the same, the presentation makes one pine for the days of the old Hot Shots Golf, where the graphics were sweet, the sound was mellow, and the gameplay was as fun as golf could get.
