Sigma Star Saga

Sigma Star Saga blends the modern handheld RPG with an old-school 2D shooter. How do these two great flavors taste together?

Random encounters are an RPG staple, but Sigma Star Saga reinvents them, replacing battle sequences with side-scrolling shoot-'em-up action. The result, though a little awkward, is a hybrid with neither the depth of a true RPG nor the frenetic pace and art design of a pure-bred shooter. Both sides of the experience are fun, but less than stellar.

The plot, which has you infiltrating the attacking alien Krill, is standard space opera fare, though the writing is a thin cut above. Colorful new environments and useful abilities are introduced often enough to keep exploration fresh, while the discovery of "gun data" parts prevents the bland shooter sequences from becoming too tiresome.

The RPG elements are more refined, so your enjoyment hinges heavily on your affection for shooters. If you're not drawn to old-school retreads like Gradius Galaxies, you'll be sick of the random encounters long before you finish. Otherwise, Sigma Star Saga's unique blend is worth a look.
