Dirt-bike fans should be in paradise when they pick up Supercross 2000, a game that's definitely not perfect, but comes as close to real supercross racing as you'll find on the N64.

Dirt-bike fans should be in paradise when they pick up Supercross 2000, a game that's definitely not perfect, but comes as close to real supercross racing as you'll find on the N64.

So Real They Named The Circuit After It
EA Sports Supercross 2000 covers the latest season of the EA Sports Supercross Series, with 24 top supercross stars like Mike LaRocco, Kevin Windham, Mike Metzger and more. You've got sixteen real supercross tracks, and an entire Season Mode to get used to them. This game has realism at its heart, with realistic racing physics and tracks that develop ruts and grooves as the race goes on. Sound like fun?

Well, the "realistic" physics take a hike when you get stuck among a pack of other racers, and the ruts and grooves seem to always occur in the same places in the tracks. The physics of the bikes do indeed seem realistic, but that doesn't necessarily make it fun.

More Real Than Fun
Overall, this game rates above-average. The N64 version of Supercross 2000 looks fine, but it loses points for clipping problems and other graphical glitches that really don't affect gameplay. Your bike sounds like it's filled with angry bees, and the play-by-play announcer (ESPN's Art Eckman) pauses audibly in between announcing an action and saying the racer's name, ruining the immersive flow of the narration. Your bike controls fairly well, but sensitive steering makes cornering a hassle. If this is realistic supercross racing, you'll probably be glad you're not on the track.
