Mortal Kombat 4

One word: Wow! Everything Mortal maniacs could want is here, and chances are they didn't expect they'd get it. Mortal Kombat 4 is a truly great port in all respects.

PlayStation kombatants, rejoice! Mortal Kombat 4 charges into the 32-bit arena with power, style, and, most of all, speed.

If youve already conquered MKs first foray into 3D weapon-based fighting in the arcade, theres new stuff here just for you, such as a new Kombat Zone (the Ice Pit); fully rendered ending cinemas (including Reikos extended ending movie, which now makes sense); new modes like Practice, Endurance, and Tournament; and, best of all, the return of hidden characters Goro and Noob Saibot to the battle, for a grand total of 17 playable fighters.

The game is, well, very fastpossibly even faster than the arcade versiondue to some missing animation frames and a few lost polygons, whose absence you wont notice in the heat of bloody battle. The backgrounds are a little spotty, but overall, everything looks great: Theres no polygon pop-up and only a little slowdown (when projectiles are on the screen). Considering the arcade game was using custom hardware to pull off all its tricks, the PlayStation version is doing a masterful job.

It may be hard to believe, but MK4 really does pack a rapid, arcade-powered punch on the PlayStation. Who needs 64 bits?
