Virtual Chess 64

Virtual Chess 64 could have been stunning; instead it's merely a video-game stalemate.

Titus brings chess to the Nintendo 64, and its a great strategic challengeif, for some reason, youre looking for a 64-bit board game.

Its a shame there arent any alternate boards or unique pieces here, but the standard Staunton set looks very nice. Utterly horrid music and about four hackneyed sound effects give you a great excuse to concentrate in silence. You can rotate the board, but only in one directionwhy not use those other buttons for more complete control? The tutorials great but slow, and the fierce computer A.I. offers ample challenge to players of all levels. Its a shame the chess clock sometimes freezes, and the four-player option is pointless.

Virtual Chess 64 could have been stunning; instead, its merely a video-game stalemate.
