The P.N.0 Player
There?s really no plot to speak of?you?re simply teleported into one of many connected rooms to start blasting anything that moves. You play as Vanessa Schneider, all-around Samus-esque space babe whose blazing lasers are coupled with lots of fanny wiggling. Aside from a few stages in the great outdoors, most of P.N.03 takes place in drab, shiny hallways. The enemies lack diversity, too, as you?ll zap similar-looking robots throughout.
Yet P.N.03 compensates for its repetitive elements with a slick reward system. Depending on your performance in each area, you?re rewarded with points that can then be used to purchase power-ups and combat suits with enhanced attributes. You?ll need this heavy firepower to take out some of the bosses and make it through most of the tougher stages in the game.
Shooting Starlet
P.N.03?s strong aesthetics add flavor to the repetitive gameplay. The frame rate holds its own?even when the screen is packed with explosions, laser fire, and chaos. The audio track works perfectly with the visuals, offering foot-tapping music and jarring sound effects. Solid controls keep Vanessa in line?although the only skills you really need to master are fire, take cover; fire, take cover; repeat. Sure, this may not be the deepest GameCube offering available, but for those who crave a shoot-em-up with old-school inflections, P.N.03 is A-OK.
