Jamming the ?Cube
The GameCube version of Def Jam is almost a code-for-code match of the PS2 version. You're a bruiser asked to return to the underground fighting world by a friend who?s in dire straits?your man Manny owes some money to underworld heavy-hitter D-Mob, and you?re going to fight to win Manny?s money back. The game?s characters, moves, story line, and match progression are exactly the same as those in the other version, but that?s not a bad thing because the game at its heart is awesome.
The GameCube version suffers a bit on a few fronts, most notably its controls and graphics. The GameCube's controller is almost better than the PS2's for most things, but the springy triggers make reversals harder, and the clumsy controller makes difficult the ?fingular rapidity? bits where you must bash buttons quickly to recover. Graphically, everything?s mostly the same as in the PS2 version; however, the GameCube makes everything look slightly better when you?re actually fighting but much, much worse in the horribly compressed between-match cinemas. A little more pro-GameCube tweaking would have helped a lot?real-time movies work great on the GameCube, for example, and Nintendo's machine can handle better-than-PS2 character models in its sleep.
Pump Up the Jam
Other than those few small nitpicks, Def Jam Vendetta succeeds as well on the GameCube as it does on the PS2. It?s exactly the sort of creative shot in the arm wrestling games need these days.
