Here Comes the Big Boss?Let?s Get It On Film director Shao Ting wants to make a kung fu comeback, so he?s arranged a stable of wannabe action heroes for his big production. He?s also unleashed scores of ninjas on wild movie sets ranging from Asian villages to sci-fi scenes and even a sinking luxury liner. For players, that means lots of beat-em-up action with a healthy dose of Mario Party?style mini-games that borrow from classics like Kaboom! and Pac-Man. Success in single-player mode opens more multiplayer options.
The mood of the game is downright silly, which works in its favor as long as you?re not offended by the intentionally mangled English grammar (?Ready, Make Fighting!?). Lalo Shifrin?s soundtrack from Enter the Dragon (syrupy strings, bold brass, wocka-wocka wah guitar) sets the 1970s musical mood, and the well-animated pint-sized pugilists riff on kung fu clich?s. The only bummer is the camera; sometimes the game forces you to awkwardly move off screen to survive.
Everybody Needs a Little KFC Simple button-mashing combos make advanced attacks pretty easy to perform, and that pays off big when you start smacking your pals around in the surprisingly addictive four-player matches. If you?ve tried Fuzion Frenzy or Whacked!, you?ll really appreciate Kung Fu Chaos?s multiplayer strengths.
With its martial arts action, Kung Fu Chaos is a bit like Mario Party with a mean streak; it?s funny and furious but not cutesy, which should serve Xbox owners just fine. Don?t underestimate it if you?re looking for four-player fun.
