Reign of Fire

Faster, Dragon, Kill, Kill!

Bam! Entertainment's tie-in to the Matthew McConaughey lizard-shragging opus drags you through two lackluster campaigns, comprised of seven missions each, in which you'll play as either a truck-driving dragon -slayer or a fire-belching 'zard. And while the potential for a dope game is undeniably present, repetitious missions and cumbersome controls pilot Reign of Fire headfirst in the dirt.

In the human campaign, the game offers two control schemes: simple and advanced, both of which make it unnecessarily tough to pick off sleek reptilian engines of flying death. The simple control settings force you to fire in the same direction your vehicle is facing, while the advanced control scheme will make you want to carve an ?X? on your forehead because steering is so counterintuitive. Even if you've enough endurance to make it through the human campaign you'll find that the dragon one is a bit more fun, though still critically wounded by sluggish mobility and obtuse maneuverability.

Despite adrenaline-flooding music and bone-chillingly evil dragon cries, the overall sound design is disappointingly wan with engines and explosions that sounds like Fisher Price toys, while undeniably wild lighting effects can't compensate for graphics that are weaker than Captain America. If you're jonesing to play as a fire-breathing monster from Hell, you'll be better off waiting for Panzer Dragoon Orta.
