Legaia 2: Duel Saga

Don?t expect an engrossing sequel to 1999?s stellar adventure. Legaia 2 barely passes in almost every category.

Unfortunately, the sequel to 1999?s hit RPG falls short of expectations. In Legaia 2, the story begins with a gold-eyed freak who wields enormous power and steals the town?s only crown jewel: a mysterious rock that purifies the village?s water. Being witness to this awful event, you take control and lead the main hero, Lang, after the thief. The game then unfolds into a story full of self-identity and soul-searching?and eventually a realization that (surprise, surprise), you?re a freak with enormous power, too.

Legaia 2?s gameplay is as predictable as the story line. While deep and engaging in plot, the game is nevertheless linear and contains a lot of annoyingly random battles, plus it has the usual sword, magic, and special inner spirit attacks during fights. A unique offense system, similar to the first Legaia?s, though, gives character to the otherwise mundane battle sequences.

The visual and sound presentation represents the game?s quality, too. Blocky, colorless characters fill the screen with lifeless animations. A diversity of sharply drawn environments, however, eases your travel to destiny. The music isn?t half-bad, but the voices and other sound effects seem incomplete.

Altogether, Legaia 2 shapes out to be a weekend rental. Though the story has a great moral, how it?s shown through gameplay and style doesn?t earn this RPG big points.
