Marvel vs. Capcom 2

Spider-Man, Ryu, Wolverine, Chun-Li, and Psylocke?come on down: You?re a few of our lucky contestants in Marvel vs. Capcom 2!

Capcom partially made its name on fighting games, and Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is a sturdy reminder that the company produced some of the best genre offerings of the 1990s. Not only does MVC2 have all the trademark attributes of a great Capcom fighter, but it also features splashy graphics and a combo-happy gameplay engine that give it universal appeal.

?Gonna Take You for a Ride?
MVC2 has over 50 characters from the Marvel and Capcom franchises, and each fighter is imbued with traditional half- and quarter-circle motions and charge moves. Fortunately, durable controls keep everything fun?not frustrating?and even newbies can master advanced techniques after a few plays. The usual suspects fill the roster (such as Ryu and Wolverine); others (including Jill Valentine and Marrow) make auspicious fighting debuts. The three-on-three battle system?where you can swap teammates at any time during a fight or call them all onscreen at once for the ultimate beat down?keeps the gameplay fresh and exciting. The characters lack balance, though, as you can easily school almost any opposition with the right powerhouse combination (ahem?Iron Man, Sentinel, and Cable).

?Good Work, Soldier!?
The show plays pretty well. Akin to other Capcom 2D fighters, MVC2 has no shortage of 2D sprite splendor?even though the bigger characters are rife with choppy movements. The audio, though, strikes a sour note in the aesthetic package as the jazzy tunes don?t belong in this game.

If you?re looking for an enjoyable 2D fighter, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 easily fits the bill. Although it?s essentially a port of an arcade game that?s two years old, this is one matchup that?s a pleasure to kill hours with at home.
