Terminator: Dawn of Fate

The Terminator: Dawn of Fate, a prequel to the 1984 film, pits you against the mechanical forces of Skynet with the fate of mankind hanging in the balance.

Between the killer license and a story line that leads right up to the first film, it was hard not to have high hopes for The Terminator: Dawn of Fate, but unfortunately, this game pummels those expectations into rubble. The action-heavy gameplay just gets hammered by illogically executed camerawork. You're constantly trying to figure out which way to push the thumbstick at every jarring perspective shift, which often results in deadlocked, repetitive patterns of entering and exiting the same room. In open areas, it ain't no drama, but in tight spaces against relentless mechanical death machines, the frustration is excruciating. Even worse, the sticky, unresponsive controls ensure that you'll spend a decent amount of time running in the wrong direction anyway.

Despite polygonal simulacrums that look nothing like their celluloid counterparts, the polished graphics, combined with sharp visual effects, immerse you within a devastated futuristic wasteland by Skynet. Although the voice-acting is stiff, there's good sound design complemented by a head-nodding militaristic score. For diehard fans, the chance to immerse themselves in the Terminator universe might make this game worth blasting though. If not for the license, though, Dawn of Fate wouldn't be worth a second look.
