Fast, playable arcade hockey for the GBA? EA Sports will get plenty of takers.
If youre pining for the glory days of the NHL series for the Genesis, NHL 2002 does a great job of resurrecting that old charm. Back in the 1990s, that series made a hockey fan out of almost every gamer, and playing this cart, its easy to see why as the old-school arcade playability remains intact. NHL 2002 even offers such console-like features as a season mode and player creation. The visuals are a straight-up rewind, tooexcept for a few stilted animations, theyre almost identical to those of the Genesis games. Aside from a slightly jerky feel to the skating, the controls respond great and include cool moves like the spin-o-rama. The sound is typical GBA fare, sporting a tinny rink announcer and white-noise crowd roars. If fast, playable hockey sounds appealing, you wont go wrong with NHL 2002.
