GTC: Africa

Yet another rally game has hit the PS2, but don?t expect a thrilling ride with GTC: Africa.

GTC: Africa is the latest edition to the already extensive PS2 rally game library. Too bad there are better racers to check out than this one.

GTC is outfitted with all the standard rally features. You can drive with licensed vehicles from Mitsubishi, Subaru, Pontiac, and Ford, and compete in 19 off-road tracks scattered across the African continent. Truly, the highlights in this racer are the diverse courses, which include jungles, mountaintops, deserts, and towns. But the visual show stops there?entire levels aren?t sharp or radically detailed like those in other PS2 rally games. Moreover, the sounds in GTC are just average. The low groan of engines is a wash with the upbeat African-themed music.

The worst part of GTC, however, is the controls. Although each car handles differently, the off-road speedsters are extremely loose, which makes for perfecting turns a frustrating task. Even on straight-aways, your roadster swerves because the analog stick is just too sensitive.

Aside from the dismal controls, GTC does have a decent single-player mode that offers plenty of driving challenges, which makes the game at least a solid rental. But if you want to play a memorable rally game, try out BAM!?s World Rally Championship instead.
