Having originally set sail from the PlayStation 2, the Xbox version?s graphics look sharper and have more going on than its shipmate?s, but the differences aren?t night and day. The presentation is sharper overall, but the main standout is the improved water effects.
The Dolby 5.1 surround sounds rich and diverse when navigating the open ocean with cannon fire producing cool bass thuds, but the audio during land-based action is dull and sparse, substituting just the occasional bird noises as atmosphere. On the plus side for audiophiles, the PS2 version supported DTS 4.0 sound, so Xbox owners can also enjoy fine center channel sound that their PS2 brethren could not.
The Legend of Black Kat is a great idea for a game, but it needs refinement in item management and greater variety in the sea and land battles. Still, Pirates offers a long and challenging adventure that fans of saucy buccaneers will enjoy.
