Calling the Touch an MP3 player is almost an insult.

It's been over three weeks since Apple sent me their new iPod Touch for review and in that time, I have never once used it to listen to music. In fact, I haven't even bothered loading any songs onto it. There are a few reasons for that: one, I'm not a fan of iTunes. Yes, the new flavor of iTunes that was revealed at the recent Apple press event looks great but I'm a far bigger fan of drag and drop functionality. I'd rather not port my entire library over and deal with the hassle; I also buy actual CDs and convert them myself, so I don't have a massive library of downloaded tunes.
But the main reason why I haven't used the Touch for music is because I'm way too busy using it for what I feel is its main function: accessing the incredible App Store. I don't own an iPhone -- I'm a Verizon customer and don't see myself switching anytime soon -- and that's why I like the iPod Touch so much: it allows me to access the App Store and all that it offers without having to abandon my current monthly phone contract.
Kid In A Candy Store
If you haven't ever browsed the Apple App Store, it really is a veritable candy store whose shelves are stocked with every confection you could imagine. It's a technical Willy Wonka factory. It can be a bit overwhelming thanks to sheer volume and there is a lot of garbage to sift through but as the old saying goes, the cream always rises to the top, so if you do some quick research, you're almost guaranteed to find an app that you'll use over and over again. Having reviewed the 3GS a while back, I was able to quickly populate my Touch with useful apps like an ESPN app that lets me quickly check sports scores and a Twitter app (Echofon) for posting quick tweets.
I also download apps like Shazam, which I'm convinced works through a combination of dark magic and elf blood (you hold it up when a song is playing and it'll identify it for you) and Bump!, a silly app that let's you trade contact information with another iPhone or Touch owner simply by bumping fists; I also found a lot of classic literature in the public domain, so I now have the entire works of Shakespeare and the Brothers Grimm literally at my fingertips.

meh. I find it easier to just sync everytime. Plus, I like the podcasts. But w/e. To each his own.
And yes, the touch does kick ass.

I agree...itunes does suck ass. I'm a big fan of drag and drop myself. I have a blackberry storm and adding music to it is incredibly easy. I hate how itunes is set up and how it works hell I'm not even a fan of apple to begin with.

cool review. I have the iPhone, and I can't get myself to play many games on it because of my DSi always on hand, and the lack of real buttons... But I LOVE some of the realistic pinball games they have. Such a great time waster waiting at the doctors office, or in the local pizza shop waiting for my food to be ready for pick-up. The iPod touch's are seriously sweet though, and so sexy thin. I've been using iTunes for close to 6 years now so luckily using the program hasn't been too much of a hassle. However, iTunes does get more and more annoying as the years go by I must admit. I hope Apple is reading this, because before, when I had a classic iPod (I got my first 40gig iPod for $499), I could manually drag and drop songs onto it, and you can't do that anymore and it's so annoying. I feel like this auto-sync garbage was designed for people who don't know how to operate computers, which I understand, but there's a large portion of people who do know how to use them, and it's unfair for you to penalize us for our knowledge. Apple, you need to give people more options like you used to.

If MS sends us one, we will definitely review it. But for whatever reason, they haven't yet.
