UFC 2009 Undisputed (PS3)

Mixed Martial Arts, specifically the UFC, has fought its way into the mainstream over the past four years, with the inevitable action figures, DVDs, and other kinds of merchandise hitting the shelves. What MMA has been missing, however, is a video game that truly does the sport justice; past efforts were passable but the sport needed its own version of Madden to help grow its audience.

THE VERDICT by Tae K. Kim Tae K. Kim's Avatar I'm not a big UFC fan like Caleb is but I have watched a few matches and all I could say was "Holy crap, that looks brutal." And after playing a little bit of Undisputed, I have to say that the game does a great job of capturing that brutality. But what the game does so well is it also captures the strategic element of the sport. It isn't just about two dudes trying to beat the crap out of each other-it's about two dudes trying strategically to beat the hell out of each other. But what do I know? I'm a total MMA noob, so stop listening to me and read the rest of Caleb's review. A bona-fide MMA nut, he has the knowledge to know if a UFC game is good or not and let's just say that Undisputed passes the test with flying colors.

Fortunately, THQ and Yuke's, known for their skillful handling of the WWE franchise, has delivered a title that perfectly captures the spirit and vibe of the brutal yet compelling sport-UFC 2009 Undisputed is a title that both hardcore fans and novices alike can embrace and has the potential to make UFC a household name among gamers.

In this corner...

The most immediately noticeable thing in Undisputed is the absolutely gorgeous character models of the UFC's stars. It's no exaggeration to say that the game achieves a level of character detail that no other MMA game has. Fighters are a spitting image of their real life counterparts with few expections-the main quibble I had was that Mirko Cro Cop's torso was too chiseled to be true to life. But for the most part, the developers perfectly modeled the fighters down to the smallest detail. The virtual version of legendary heavyweight Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, for example, has an exact replica of the large indentation that the real Nogueira sports on his back (it was the result of a childhood accident).

The game's presentation is also spot on: prefight festivities are identical to an actual UFC broadcast; the only thing missing are the fighters' entrances, as the combatants automatically start off inside the Octagon. Bruce Buffer bellows out his trademark introductions while well known referees oversee the action. In a welcome move, there is no HUD interface displayed during the fights. It's fun to look at each fighter for clues to their overall health (cuts, bruises, deep breathing, holding their hands low) instead of merely watching a status bar tick down.

The in game commentary is just as impressive. Play-by-play man Mike Goldberg and color commentator Joe Rogan contribute a staggering 36 hours of audio and feed off each other for a very strong interlaced dynamic. Rogan in particular has many interesting stories on the fighters and their backgrounds. It's entertaining to just listen to what he knows about some of the lesser known guys that don't typically grab the headlines.

Looks like fun, I'll have to give it a shot... to the body.

LOL! I will be submitting as many people as possible on Tuesday. All about the arm bar, baby.

Would've been cool to have custom soundtracks for entrances, or entrances period.. hopefully they include that in the next game.

Run....do not walk to go buy this game! I have had a chance to get a sneak peek play of this game and this review is spot on! If you are a UFC fan you will love this game.

If you go to Game Stop or EB Games to buy you will get 2 exclusive fighters bringing the total fighters available to 82. Can't get the code online so you need buy there!

What's the weight limit for fighters when you make them? I heard it was only 235lbs.. if so that kinda sucks.. I wanna be able to make guys like Tank Abbott, Butterbean and Bob Sapp just for laughs.

nice - now I'm even more stoked to get this next week. I'm not sure I need the additional DLC's so I think I'll do the best buy preorder since they'll give me a ufc dvd, a $10 gift card and $10 ppv cash coupon. But the game looks def worth the money either way....

Career mode is way deeper than Fight Night.....and not as annoying. Alot of funny comments from Dana as you play....very true to the UFC show. The moves are alot deeper than what you get to experience in the downloadable demo.....whether you buy it at Best Buy, Walmart, Gamestop, whatever...pick it up!

the only thing I didn't like about the game was the submissions, which made you circle the right stick while pressing the face buttons, it just felt awkward. Other than that the controls were great.
