Like PaRappa, U-1, our every-man hero, turns to music after being embarrassed in front of his crush. But while PaRappa learns to dish out mad libs, U-1 saves the planet from aliens after discovering he's a rock star when an ax-wielding baby devil from another dimension appears in his room and tells him his destiny.
Your tool of justice is an air guitar that?s controlled by the analog stick and button presses. Matching your rhythm with the onscreen "Play Line" quickly gives you the feel of playing a real instrument. You have to build up your health in the Charge stage before moving to Battle, so you need to nail the solos early.
The 3D graphics are smooth and colorful, but almost intentionally distracting during gameplay. Produced by the Japanese rock band Coil, the music is the heart and soul of this game, and adds serious replay value. This is good because gameplay gets hard fast, even if the difficulty level is set on easy. You can trade licks with up to three friends in multiplayer mode, which is just icing on the cake for a thoroughly enjoyable, if challenging, game.
