LOL

The tagline for LOL issues a bold challenge: "If this game is boring, YOU are boring!" To which your immediate response is inevitably, "Screw you Agetec, I'll show you how awesome I am!"

LOL's catchphrase is more truth than bluff. Whether or not you have fun with Agetec's party game is totally up to you. Blaming LOL for a lack of fun is like blaming a sports stadium for a baseball team's lousy performance (wait, people do that, don't they?).

LOL is best described as a glorified Pictochat room with some added bells and whistles. The game is multiplayer only: the host (only one DS card is needed and up to four can play) scribbles a challenge on the touch screen and the other players must complete it. An optional time limit can be enforced if desired. Players vote for the "best" answer, and another host is chosen for the next round.

The nature of the challenge is completely up to the host. LOL's instruction manual suggests doing some creative editing with half-drawn pictures, or completing a sentence ("My baloney has a first name, it's ________"). Of course, every player's first instinct is to get as filthy as possible and admittedly there are some good laughs to be had.

The laughs might not last forever; LOL wears a bit thin after a few hours. The game's wacky presentation grates pretty quickly thanks to annoying audio additions like laugh tracks (I can laugh at my friend's phallic imagery on my own, thanks), high-pitched voices and goofy catch phrases. The host can access a mini-game while waiting for the other players to complete his challenge. It's a nice diversion, but the game itself is a simple and monotonous challenge to poke at some little cartoon guys scurrying across the touch screen. Some variety would've been nice.

LOL's presentation is otherwise difficult to judge because there's no call for complex graphics. That said, the cartoon "mascots" are a little generic and the sound is annoying, but the game works well as a party diversion. It's available through Agetec's website for $20.00; if you find yourself the baffled over ways to entertain your guests at a gathering, it might be money well spent.

PROS: The game's as fun as you want to make it.
CONS: If you're dull-minded, it'll get old quickly.
