ESPN NFL PrimeTime 2002

Are you ready for PrimeTime? Is PrimeTime ready for you?

ESPN NFL PrimeTime 2002 plays a decent game of PlayStation 2 football, but it?s at least number three behind Madden NFL 2002 and NFL 2K2 this year?and that leaves little running room.

The graphics, at first, strike you as just being funny. They?re more stylized than those of other football games with player models that sport a ?stubby-neck? look with extra long arms. Player movement appears stiff and robotic, too. Once the ball has been snapped, however, the arcade-style gameplay pumps out some nice animation, and the controls for ballcarriers and passers are generally on-target. There are a few thumb-straining keypad combos, though, like holding L1 and then pressing L or R to shift the defensive line.

The sounds are respectable?but the crowd noise is generic, and you expect to hear more excitement from ESPN?s Chris Berman and Tom Jackson.

This is an intriguing game with some chops that show promise. If ESPN can fortify its visuals and get Berman fired up, it might be ready for primetime next season.
