Formula One 2001

Burn PS2 rubber, F1-style, with 989 Sports' Formula One 2001.

Gran Turismo 3 isn't the be all and end all for racing action on the PS2, as evidenced by the proliferation of NASCAR and F1 racing titles over the years. 989 Sports presents Formula One 2001, the latest edition of its F1 racing series, and caters directly to the diehard F1 fan's appetite for all the tasty nuances and intricacies of F1 racing. Five different game modes offer everything from a Test Drive to entering the World Championship as you face off against the computer AI or a buddy behind another wheel.

The meat of this game is the incredible array of customization options for your ride. You choose from over a dozen actual F1 racing teams, and are able to adjust nearly every conceivable feature of your car, from front wing angle to rear bump damps. The graphics are quite sharp and detailed, creating believable tracks, cars, and environments. Little nuances such as mud and dirt that stick to the tires when you go off track?and then rub off the tires when you get back on----don?t go unnoticed. Sound effects are adequate in creating a realistic F1 racing environment, but don?t provide much more beyond the telltale whine of a F1 engine cruising at 175mph. The controls are very responsive, and GT3 button mashers will soon realize that you need a subtle hand and sharp mind for racing strategy in order to master these courses.

Arcade racers will be quite challenged by the difficulties of true F1 racing, and may run crying back to the muscle cars in GT3 out of frustration. However, if you already know what F1 racing is all about, then you can expect a well-crafted racing experience.
